Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) was the first cardiothoracic application of a minimally invasive surgical technique. In the right patient, the VATS lobectomy approach has meaningful advantages. VATS can offer better visualization, shorter operative times, less pain from smaller incisions, and a reduced length of stay. Beyond that, the technique preserves tactile feedback and works with a large variety of instruments–all at a lower cost than robotic surgery. Despite this fact, there are limited materials available to teach VATS Surgery. The few resources that do teach lobectomy often lose the forest in the trees (or the PA in the parenchyma). Key anatomy is obscured by diagrams with overwhelming detail, or live operative pictures that are often difficult to identify. The VATS Lobectomy Book aims to establish a standardized approach to lobectomy, utilizing a picture-based approach that shows the anatomy as it normally lies and how it changes after each step in the procedure. The images in the book are oversimplified by design; patients in the operating room will often look different from what is drawn, but the relationships will be the same. By understanding these relationships, surgeons will be able to operate with confidence even when the anatomy may not be readily visible. This book is a must-read for anyone looking to understand minimally invasive lobectomy through a clear, simplified approach.

This book proposes a way of understanding human movement and its forms of deterioration and preservation in older people. The author presents a method to diagnose motor problems, to implement effective both preventive and therapeutic measures, and to compare the results with those of other clinicians and health centres. It is a conceptual and practical book at the same time. From the redefinition of the classic geriatric syndrome of Immobility, a concept of deep clinical interest is developed: Dysmobility. Moreover, a specially developed methodology is delivered to maximise the benefits for the patient, clinicians, and caregivers. Both the concepts and the methodology are discussed in a clear, precise, and practical manner to be applied in the daily clinical practice in Geriatrics. Dysmobility is defined in its three diagnostic axes, including the official updated version of D-STAGING (known as ETADI in Spanish), the motor continuum staging that revolutionised the clinic with its advent. Additionally, the requirements and criteria necessary for its correct application and use are explained conceptually step by step, and practically with clinical cases. Along with this, the new possibilities that arise from this conceptualisation and methodology are addressed, particularly in the field of comparative medicine and clinical research. Finally, the bases of a new theory of aging, the Movement-Time theory or theory of Dysmobility, are presented. This work will support physicians from different medical specialties, such as geriatricians, physiatrists, family doctors, geriatric dentists, and health professionals from the interdisciplinary team like gerontologists, nurses, kinesiologists/physiotherapists, psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists and social workers. It will also be of interest to students of health-related professions, resident physicians for different specialties, and researchers in mobility and rehabilitation.

This book is for everyone who is concerned about the successful future of a very special institution – the National Health Service (NHS). It provides the reader with an overview of the complexity of healthcare delivery, and the crucial influence that fairness should have on healthcare planning. The National Health Service Act was approved by Clement Attlee’s Labour Government on 5 July 1948. It was created in a great post-war spirit of community with the aim of providing free care at the point of need for everyone, rich or poor. However, right from the start the NHS has faced issues in tackling the challenges that arise in trying to be fair, and of how greater equity in healthcare can be achieved. The focus is on issues of fairness and equity in healthcare in the NHS, what fairness and equity mean both generally and in the organisational context. It begins with chapters on the inequalities that exist in UK healthcare delivery today. Then a series of chapters focuses on different elements of fairness in healthcare: governance, policy, and leadership; finance and financing; healthcare delivery; the key behaviours required of those working in the NHS and importantly, the patient perspectives. The conclusions and recommendations will be of great interest to health and social care practice staff, health and social care managers and leaders, politicians and policy makers, health and social care specialists, operational managers within the system, NHS boards and healthcare governors, integrated care providers, primary, continuity and specialist providers, and charities in the healthcare sector. It will also be of interest to academics and others involved in training, research and development, students studying health, social care, and management and to the wider public: to everyone who is concerned about the successful future of a very special institution – the National Health Service.

The nursing profession is in crisis. Within a decade, the world will have just over half the number of nurses it needs. The global nursing workforce has experienced mass, complex trauma secondary to healthcare system inadequacies and a global pandemic. Traumatized and burned out nurses are leaving their roles or the profession in unprecedented numbers. Those who remain are stretched to or beyond their capacity. While system-level strategies aim to address this crisis, none of them consider nurse traumatization and its impact upon patient safety, outcomes, and quality of care. We cannot wait for health systems to prioritize nurse safety. Nurses can and must come together as a global community to heal through avoidable and unavoidable nurse-specific traumatization while partnering with healthcare leaders to usher in a new era of nursing. This book, through an actionable framework, guides nurses in healing the traumas and hardships they ve endured as individuals and nursing communities. Grounded in the sciences of unitary caring, integrative nursing, neurophysiology, and transpersonal neurobiology, this book supports nurses in restoring their healers heart as they come together to address the deep trauma, burnout, attrition, and presenteeism that are central to the nursing crisis. Nurses will learn the language of their nervous system and how to navigate it as a foundational practice to support professional wellbeing. Each nurse will discover their unique innate care plan, which will guide their healing and co-healing with other nurses. By embracing the healing and practices offered in this book, nurses will learn how to support their nervous system regulation so they can thrive instead of survive in practice. Working from their healed scars instead of their open wounds, nurses can effectively lead sustainable organizational change and health care reforms that prioritize nurse safety and professional wellbeing.
